A moose that fell through ice on a frozen river was rescued on Easter Sunday by a group of neighbors and troopers.
Fairbanks resident Gary Niese first saw the moose fall into the Chena River.
‘I looked out the window here and right over there you could see this moose fighting for his life,’ Niese told KTUU. ‘He was clearly unable to get out of the hole and was fighting with all his effort.’
A couple of hours later, Niese had more hands on deck, including members of the Alaska State Troopers.
‘Naturally when I heard the call come out on the radio about a moose that needed to be free from the ice, that sounded a lot more exciting than what I was doing at the time,’ trooper Trevor Norris told the TV station. ‘So me and the guys ran out there and used it as an opportunity to help out.’
A few men tied a rope around the moose’s legs and tried to pull it out, but it became visibly tired. More neighbors joined in the effort for a total of six bodies, until the moose finally climbed out with ice covering its head.
‘Although tired and cold, the moose was able to stand on its own and thankful for the assistance,’ wrote the troopers on a Facebook post.
After being rescued, the moose stood with the troopers and did not appear to want to move.
‘Well now what are we going to do with you?’ said Niese.
The troopers wrote that they ‘wished the moose a Happy Easter and warned her of the dangers of thawing river ice’.
There have been numerous moose incidents this winter in the state. Moose rescues occurred in Anchorage and Wasilia in January and March, respectively. Last week, a moose went into a home in Soldotna and another one made its way into an Anchorage hospital.
And in December, an Alaska couple witnessed a moose shed its antlers through the recording of their Ring doorbell camera.
