President Joe Biden has revealed his plans to appoint Lady Gaga to co-chair his Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
The White House on Thursday announced a list of two dozen individuals Biden plans to appoint, which included the award-winning singer, actress and philanthropist born Stefani Germanotta.
‘Welcome newly appointed members of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, led by @BruceCohen83 and @ladygaga!’ tweeted the committee. ‘We look forward to partnering to positively impact the arts, libraries, museums, and humanities work across the country.’
The White House highlighted Lady Gaga’s various philanthropic acts and her staunch support of LGBTQI+ rights and push for mental health.
‘She has traveled with President Biden to support the It’s On Us campaign to combat campus sexual assault, has worked tirelessly over the years to advocate for equality, and has been an outspoken champion of mental health awareness,’ stated the White House.
Lady Gaga and her mother founded the Born This Way Foundation supporting mental health for youth. The Just Dance singer helped raise more than $128million by curating a televised concert for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
The White House pointed out Lady Gaga’s achievements including 13 Grammy Awards, winning a best actress Golden Globe for American Horror Story: Hotel and establishing herself as a fashion icon.
Lady Gaga openly supported Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign and sang the national anthem during his inauguration. She later said that performance was ‘the honor of my lifetime’.
‘I wish to send an extended prayer out to all the people that live on this land, that you will feel whole, that you will feel loved,’ she added about the performance.
The committee, which was founded in 1982 to provide cultural policy advice to the president, has historically had the first lady as its honorary chair.
Biden plans to appoint Academy Award-winning producer Bruce Cohen as the co-chair and celebrity members including actors George Clooney and Jennifer Garner, among others.
