Nearly £100million has been raised by a UK appeal after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria in one of the ‘fastest and largest’ disaster responses.
Funds that initially supported the search and rescue operation are now helping provide children and families with food, water, temporary shelters – such as tents – and warm clothing.
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which brings together 15 UK charities, said donations had reached £98million since the February 6 quake.
‘The British Red Cross through the Turkish Red Crescent has distributed 36million hot meals including 31million loaves of bread,’ said DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed.
‘I think that just demonstrates the scale of the humanitarian operation, and people also need medical care.’
UN officials have warned that the number of people who have lost their lives in the disaster could exceed 50,000.
