The man who police suspected was responsible for beating and torturing a woman in Oregon was killed on Tuesday night after eluding capture for a week.
The manhunt for Benjamin Obadiah Foster ended climactically after the suspect barricaded himself inside a home in Grants Pass.
He had been on the run since last Wednesday, after police identified him as the suspect when a woman was found unconscious, bound by the wrists and legs, tortured, and near death the night before.
According to police, the woman had a ‘prior relationship’ with Foster.
Grants Pass Police Chief Warren Hensman told CNN the scene was ‘absolutely horrific’ and ‘disgusting.’
‘I’ve seen a lot in my career, but some things do stick with you, and this will stay stained in my memory for many years to come,’ he told the network.
Authorities warned locals not to approach Foster if seen, and also warned that he was using dating apps to find more victims or people to trick into helping him escape capture.
In statement released on Tuesday night, Police in Grants Pass said that Foster was finally in custody after searching for nearly a week. They revealed he was rushed to the hospital after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He succumbed to his injuries about an hour later.
Foster was located in a residential neighborhood in the small city in southwestern Oregon. Police were tipped off after a local took a photo of him walking a small dog on their sidewalk.
Police tracked him to a nearby property Tuesday afternoon, where he barricaded himself in for hours. Four different departments surrounded the house, and negotiators spent hours trying to get him to surrender.
Residents nearby were given ‘shelter in place’ orders until the standoff ended around 8pm.
One other person was arrested for helping Foster escape. A SWAT team raided the home of Tina Marie Jones, 68, on Thursday night and took her into custody. She was charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly helping the man hide his car in the woods.
Foster, however, had already escaped.
