A major retailer has recalled a brand of weighted blankets after they were linked to the suffocation of two children.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of roughly 204,000 children’s weighted blankets sold at Target stores online and across the country.

The blankets were came from the store’s Pillowfort brand, and were sold between December 2018 and September 2022 in a variety of colors and patterns marketed toward young children. The blankets sold for about $40 and were manufactured in China.

The recall was prompted after the blankets were linked to the death of two children in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The two victims, a four-year-old and a six-year-old, were killed by asphyxiation in April 2022.

The blankets weigh about six pounds and measure 60 inches by 40 inches. They also came with a removable washable cover fastened to the product by a zipper.

After an investigation, the CPSC found that children can easily become entrapped in the blankets by unzipping and entering them.

At least two more children have become trapped in the Pillowfort blankets, but neither incident lead to any deaths.
