A gunman shot five people dead before being killed by police in a Toronto suburb.
Another person shot by the suspect is being treated in hospital and is expected to survive.
Officers responded to an active shooting call in a condominium unit in Vaughan, a city just north of Toronto, around 7.20pm on Sunday.
They discovered a ‘horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased’.
One officer shot dead the suspect, who has not been identified.
Police say they do not have details on motive or whether the gunman was a resident of the building.
The victims also remain unidentified currently.
‘Six deceased. One of them is the subject. The other five are victims’, York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween said in a news conference.
Mr MacSween has assured locals there is no further threat to the community.
He said earlier police hoped to have residents back in their units within hours.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which gets involved when there is a death or serious injury involving police, is investigating.
Mass shootings are rare in Canada and Toronto has long prided itself as being one of the safest big cities in the world.
