Police officers who responded to a home burglary went above and beyond their call of duty by replacing Christmas gifts that were stolen by a ‘true life Grinch’.
Cops on Christmas Eve went to the scene of a breaking and entering complaint at a home in South Bend, Indiana.
‘After talking to the homeowner, officers learned that Christmas gifts had been taken, leaving the children with nothing for the holidays,’ wrote the South Bend Police Department on Facebook.
The officers got in touch with the FOP Lodge #36 Santa’s Elficers program and found they had leftover gifts they could pick up.
‘Officers then came back to the residence with several boxes of Christmas presents and food for the family,’ the police department stated. ‘This is what serving our community is all about.’
A video posted by the police department shows the moment that children at the burglarizes home discovered brand new presents surrounding their Christmas tree. The new gifts included a bicycle, dolls and various board games and toys.
The children’s mother says, ‘Oh my goodness, thank you’, as her children run up to the gifts.
‘You’re welcome,’ one of the four police officers says.
The mother, holding a third child, tells her young ones: ‘You got your stuff back. Say thank you. Aren’t you happy?’
Patrolman Brian Meador said that burglars left the family with hardly anything.
‘They found out that the house had been burglarized, and in the process, the individual had taken all the gifts and even some food out of their refrigerator,’ Meador told WNDU.
The officer compared the criminal in the incident to a ‘true life Grinch’.
‘Yep, cleaned them out. Not even the Who-hash or the Roast Beast’ remained, the cop said. ‘It was all taken.’
The police officers didn’t stop there. They later brought food for the family, according to Storyful.
