A teenager snatched $18,000 worth of handbags and merchandise from a Louis Vuitton store – but was stopped in his tracks when he ran smack into a glass wall.
The 17-year-old male suspect dressed in all dark clothing can be seen grabbing several items from the shelves of the luxury store in Bellevue, Washington, and dashing toward the exit. Surveillance footage shows the thief running straight into a glass wall and collapsing to the ground.
A security guard can be seen running over to the teen and hovering over him to take him into custody. Another loss prevention worker assists.
The teen was semi-conscious but not breathing or alert when police officers arrived at the scene. He was taken to a hospital, where he was released to a family member, Bellevue Police Department Public Information Officer Meeghan Black told the Daily Mail.
Prosecutors did not disclose the suspect’s identity because he is a juvenile.
Surveillance footage also showed two women taking items from the store and dashing out. Unlike the teenage boy, the women quickly exited through a door and were not stopped by security guards.
The act in August, which continues to make the rounds on social media, was part of a retail crime theft ring, according to Fox News.
Since the incident, the police department has launched an anti-crime initiative using real-time data to track when criminal activity is unfolding, Black said.
‘The police department in partnership with loss prevention of these stores have teamed up for higher visibility and undercover operations inside the stores to target these prolific thieves,’ she said. ‘We have had significant success.’
Black added that Bellevue, an affluent suburb, is an ‘easy target’ for thieves because it has many high-end stores and is close to a freeway.
The Louis Vuitton incident is not the only bizarre theft-related act recently caught on camera.
In July, a man who broke into a doughnut shop in California and stole cash and other items was recorded returning to the scene of the crime – because he apparently forgot his keys.
