A grandad caused £48,000 worth of damage after ‘completely trashing’ a hotel room while naked and high on drugs.

Michael Turner, 52, smashed the glass in the shower and left it running, flooding his room and causing water to seep into those below at the Heritage Hotel in Porthcawl, Bridgend.

Co-owner Dale Smith found Turner in the buff and slurring his words when he entered the room following complaints from other guests on October 7 last year.

Turner denied causing the damage when he was arrested, insisting the room was in ‘perfect condition’ the night before and later said he ‘can’t remember’ doing it.

Prosecutor Andrew Kendal told Cardiff Crown Court there was substantial damage to walls, carpets and electrics totalling more than £48,000.

The court heard Turner, who pleaded guilty to criminal damage, has since spent £10,000 of his own money repairing some of it.

Defending, Andrew Taylor said Turner has a long history with substance misuse and described him acting ‘erratic and in an unusual way’ before the offence.

He said: ‘[Turner] tells me he needs to start rebuilding his life.’

Mr Taylor told the court Turner has mental health difficulties and had split up from his partner of 24 years, but wanted to rebuild relationships with his children and grandchildren.

Sentencing, Judge David Wynn Morgan said: ‘You had an addiction to class A drugs and the offence was committed while you were under the influence of controlled drugs.’

Turner was jailed for 14-and-a-half months.
