A gunman accused of shooting and killing five people at an LGBTQ club in Colorado Springs looked bruised and was barely able to speak in his first court appearance.
Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was slumped over and seemed bewildered in court via video conference on Wednesday, four days after allegedly opening fire at Club Q.
Wearing a yellow sleeveless protective jail smock, Aldrich was barely audible answering a few questions.
‘Could the defendant please state his name?’ said Judge Charlotte Ankeny.
‘Anderson Aldrich,’ the suspect said weakly, hardly appearing awake and with his head resting on his right shoulder.
Aldrich’s answers to a few more questions from the judge could barely be made out. Public defenders Joseph Archambault and Michael Bowman stood alongside him.
Ankeny ordered him to be remain held without bail.
Aldrich was released from a hospital and booked into jail on Tuesday. He was treated for injuries he sustained when Club Q goers tried to disarm him, according to officials. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
Formal charges against Aldrich are expected at his next court date, which has been set for December 6. He should appear in person, said Colorado’s Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen.
Preliminary charges against Aldrich include five counts of first-degree murder and five counts of a bias-motivated crime causing bodily injury, the El Paso County Court docket indicates.
‘We’ll be reviewing all of the evidence and making the appropriate filing decisions at the appropriate time,’ said Allen.
