Four members of a family, including an 8-month-old baby, were kidnapped from a business on Monday, authorities said.
Jasdeep Singh and Jasleen Kaur were taken ‘against their will’ in Merced, California, along with their infant daughter, Aroohi Dheri. Amandeep Singh, the baby’s uncle, was also taken.
The family was kidnapped at gunpoint from the business. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said that they believe the assailant to still be armed and dangerous.
The Sheriff’s Office has not said what business the family was taken from, only that it was on the 800 block of California Highway 59.
Sheriff Vern Warnke said that investigators have no idea why the family was targeted. ‘We have no motivation behind it. We just know that they are gone,’ he said in a message posted to Facebook on Tuesday.
The Sheriff’s Office also released photos of a possible suspect, who is seen on security camera footage wearing a black hoodie and a blue surgical mask to cover his face.
The sheriff said he had a light complexion and a shaved head.
It is unclear if more the Sheriff’s Office are looking for one or more suspects in the case. ‘We have evidence to indicate the individuals involved in this destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover their tracks,’ Warnke said in his message on Tuesday.
Warnke said the Sheriff’s Office deployed investigators to canvass the area while also searching overhead with aircraft.
‘So far as I know, no contact has been made, no ransom demands, nothing from the suspect,’ he said.
Warnke implored anyone with information about the crime or the suspect to contact the sheriff’s office. ‘We gotta bring this family home safely,’ he said.
Merced is a city of about 86,000 in California’s rural Central Valley region. It is about 110 miles south of Sacramento and 55 miles northwest of Fresno.
