King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla are now the country’s monarchs, after Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96.

A poignant photograph showed the couple walking through the gates of Buckingham Palace on Friday.

When the King addressed the nation on Friday, he spoke very lovingly about his ‘darling wife’s devotion’.

The pair have been married for 17 years but they have had a very tumultuous relationship since the first day they met.

Here is a break down of all the major events in Charles and Camilla’s relationship.

Charles and Camilla: From the beginning until now

The couple met at a polo match in the summer of 1970 when Charles was 22 and Camilla was 24.

Charles reportedly said it was love at first sight for him.

They dated for a while but broke up when Charles had to go to sea.

It is difficult to know for sure, but many have speculated that the Royal Family did not deem Camilla a suitable wife for Charles.

This is because she was not technically from an aristocratic family and she had been in previous relationships before.

After a few years of an on-and-off-again relationship with Charles, Camilla decided to marry Army Cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles.

The pair had two children, Laura and Tom.

Charlies said ‘I do’ to Diana in front of 750 million people watching on television.

The couple also had two children – Prince William and Prince Harry.

Too in love to stay away from each other, the couple are thought to have resumed their love affair this year.

Charles later admitted to being unfaithful to Diana but said it was only after his marriage had ‘irretrievably broken down, us both having tried’.

The Sunday Mirror and People published transcripts of a private, sexual phone conversation between Charles and Camilla.

The couple joked about Charles ‘coming back as a pair of knickers’ so he could ‘feel his way along’ Camilla.

Camilla and her husband were divorced within two years of her affair being revealed.

Charles and Diana were divorced a year later.

Diana’s death rocked the country in 1997 and there was not much seen or heard of Charles and Camilla in the two years that followed.

The couple were pictured together in public for the first time in 1999, leaving Camilla’s sister’s birthday party at the Ritz Hotel in London.

The couple were finally able to be together properly when they married at Windsor Guildhall in 2005.

Harry and William both went to the wedding.

Just months before Queen Elizabeth II died, at the Platinum Jubilee, she announced that Camilla should succeed her.

She said: ‘When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.’
