An elderly woman is worried a building site close to her home will ‘plummet the value of her property’.

Barbara Harber, 74, has lived in her house, in Totton, New Forest, for more than 50 years with her husband John who is now in a care home.

But now, a new three-bedrooom family home is being built right next to hers.

Barbara is upset the plans were approved as she believes the new build ‘has taken thousands off the value of (her) house’.

She told the Daily Echo: ‘I am hoping the house gets taken down. I do want to move eventually when my husband dies, but we have lived here for so long, so why should I give in to them?’

She also explained how the construction has had an ‘absolutely horrendous’ impact on her day-to-day life.

Barbara claims her disabled parking bay has been taken up by a lorry using the space to load materials into the site four times.

She said: ‘I am very surprised the council has approved this. I have been ignored because I live on my own. It would be different if John were still here.’

New Forest District Council said said the plans for the new house were approved ‘several years ago’.

A spokesperson said: ‘The most recent application sought to make some minor changes to external appearance of the home and a revised internal layout.

‘It was not considered that these changes would have any additional impact upon neighbours or the amenity of the area and was recommended for approval.

‘The proposal was supported by the town council. Neighbours were consulted, but no comments were received.’
