Fears of a battered Mars bar shortage have apparently been sparked in Scotland amid reports of shops running low.

Locals in Edinburgh jokingly expressed their concern after a chip shop claimed a lack in supply was threatening the country’s infamous deep-fried snack version.

One person declared ‘a national disaster’ at the news, while another quipped ‘this is a crime against humanity’.

Meanwhile, customers at big supermarkets have reported encountering empty shelves, as the maker of Mars notes ‘high demand’.

A ‘major retailer’ told the Guardian that ‘[it] looks like a production issue on Mars’s end may be causing gaps across retailers’.

Clamshell Takeaway said they ran out last week and were unable to make the tourist favourite.

Owner Giuseppe Andreucci told The Telegraph on Sunday: ’We buy from Cash & Carry wholesalers and we currently have no stock today because we couldn’t get them. We think there is a shortage.’

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, he later revealed they ‘were out of stock all of last week and over the weekend but we have them again for now’.

Mr Andreucci added that it had been ‘hard to keep up with demand’ for deep-fried Mars Bars during the Edinburgh Fringe.

In response, one Scot said: ‘Oh no, life as we know it is over.’

But another insisted only tourists eat deep-friend Mars bars, saying: ‘I feel like this is mostly due to tourists as opposed to actual Scots.

‘We don’t really eat fried Mars Bar, or at least I don’t know anyone who’s had one, but for some reason folk outside UK are told by media that we love it.’

On Wednesday evening, Asda online was out of the Mars multipack of four and the snack size multipack.

Meanwhile, eight bar multi-packs were out of stock on the Morrisons website.

Stock appeared to be fine at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

Mars Wrigley, the company behind Mars, Snickers, Bounty and Twix bars, has admitted it is ‘experiencing high levels of demand’

But a spokesperson said the firm wanted to ‘reassure the British public that our much-loved brands are still available nationwide’.
