The mother of a 15-year-old boy who had his arm clipped off at the elbow while ‘subway surfing’ in New York City says she’s urging the teen to stay strong.

Hamza Mohamed was riding a northbound R train Monday morning with friends when he tried to climb on top of the car at the 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens. The teen then fell from atop the train into the tracks below, and had part of his arm torn off by the train as it pulled away from the station.

The boy’s mother, Soha Mohamed, told the New York Post that the family is trying to remain positive following the treacherous incident that left her son with a severed arm.

‘I told him accidents happen in our life and it’s tough for us but we can get through it because we’re strong,’ she said.

Hamza is expected to go into surgery Wednesday, after which his family hopes to learn if he can be fitted for a prosthetic hand. Doctors haven’t given the family a timeline for the young boy’s recovery, though they expect an update on his condition by the end of the week.

‘I just need him to be OK and then we’ll see everything,’ his mother added.

The teen’s family says they were unaware of any subway surfing the teen had attempted until after the accident, and that they haven’t shared the full extent of his injuries with his younger brother.

‘We told him that there was an accident and it was a bad situation and (his brother will) come back soon,’ the mother said.

Soon after he was taken to the hospital on Monday, the lower portion of his arm was found at the next subway station under the R train, according to Fox 8.

New York City Transit President Richard Davey warned residents against subway surfing in July, noting there have been hundreds of instances of people riding on top of trains already this year.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, the New York City Police Department said.
