House left on verge of ‘collapse’ after suspected drunk driver smashed into it

A suspected drunk driver narrowly avoided seriously hurting himself and others when he smashed his car into a home.

The Stockport property’s walls were left on the verge of collapse after a vehicle ploughed into it yesterday.

Witnesses said parts of the house are ‘collapsing’ and the porch was totally wiped out due to the sheer force of the impact.

Authorities have confirmed the crash caused ‘significant structural damage’ but miraculously no one was badly injured.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage while drink driving. 

Officers taped off the road for hours as an investigation was launched and attempts were made to make the property safe.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘At around 4.40pm on Friday 12 August 2022, police were called to a report of damage to a property on Peveril Drive, Stockport involving a vehicle. 

‘Emergency services attended the scene to assist with the removal of the vehicle and to inspect the property to ensure its safety.

‘There are believed to be no life threatening injuries. 

‘A 57-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage whilst drink driving and remains in custody.’

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Mercifully there were no injuries at this incident. 

‘Specialist firefighters experienced in very complex rescue scenarios worked alongside Electricity Northwest, Stockport Council’s building inspector, and other colleagues to shore up the damaged house, isolate gas and electricity supplies and prevent further structural collapse while the vehicle was removed.’
