A homeowner’s doorbell camera caught the horrifying moment a UPS driver collapsed on his doorstep on a hot summer’s day.
Footage shows the delivery person walking to the front door of a home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He can be seen bending over to set down a package when he suddenly falls over and lands in a sitting position. The delivery person then sits for a bit before laying down on the porch.
Eventually, he gets up and rings the doorbell, but eventually staggers back to the UPS truck when there’s no response.
The homeowner, Brian Enriquez, was at work on Thursday when he received a notification from his Ring doorbell. He told KPNX he now regrets not seeing the notification sooner.
‘I was concerned for the fact that he was coming, stumbling to the door,’ Enriquez said. ‘Had I gotten to my phone sooner, I could have talked to him through my Ring, but he had already left the property at that point.’
Shocked by what he had seen, Enriquez called the police for a welfare check. He also alerted UPS to let them know one of their employees seemed to be struggling.
Enriquez says he believes the extreme heat is what caused the driver to collapse, and has since shared the video to warn others of the dangers of the current heatwave hitting the US. Scottsdale, where Enriquez lives, hit 110 degrees Fahrenheit last Thursday.
In a statement, UPS thanked Enriquez for his concern over the employee’s wellbeing.
‘We can report that he [the delivery driver] is fine,’ UPS said.
‘UPS drivers are trained to work outdoors and for the effects of hot weather. Our employee used his training to be aware of his situation and contact his manager for assistance, who immediately provided assistance.’
Enriquez told the outlet he was relieved to hear the driver was unharmed following the incident.
‘I just want to make sure those guys are safe, you know, and with this heat, those guys don’t have AC in those trucks,’ Enriquez said. ‘His safety is my concern.’
Enriquez added that he hopes that the video will encourage delivery companies to better help their drivers during the hot summer months.
