A man broke into a doughnut shop’s office and grabbed cash and other items – only to return to the scene because he apparently forgot his keys.

The thief broke into the office of Johnny Doughnuts, an artisanal baked goods shop, in San Rafael, California, on Saturday, police said.

He forced his way into the office between 8 and 8.30pm and stole multiple items, police said on Monday.

The man can be seen moving about the office and a back storage area, where police say he pried open a filing cabinet.

He reportedly stole a bank bag with an undisclosed sum of cash from the cabinet.

Police also said he grabbed the keys to one of the company’s food trucks, but did not steal the truck itself.

The man can then be seen returning to the scene of the crime when he realized his mistake.

‘Part of the investigating is finding out why this specific business was targeted,’ said Lt Dan Fink.

Police did not initially say if they believed the burglar worked at the office.

Cops are asking for the community’s help in identifying the suspect, who can be seen in surveillance footage wearing a blue University of Kentucky Wildcats shirt.

Johnny Doughnuts is a small chain operating several locations and food trucks in the San Francisco Bay Area. They use locally sourced ingredients and dough recipes from the 1920s, according to their website.

The San Rafael doughnut shop is the company’s flagship store.

‘We’re happy knowing that our doughnuts and enthusiasts were not in harm’s way during the time of this incident,’ Johnny Doughnuts’ Craig Blum told Metro.co.uk. ‘We’ll all go to various lengths when we’re desperate for doughnuts.’
