Residents of a seaside town have revolted over a ‘Shrek-green’ coloured footpath.

The distinctive track runs through the historic harbour in Weymouth, Dorset.

Some have branded the colour choice as akin to ‘mushy peas’ while others have praised its usefulness for people with visual impairments.

Councillor Louie O’Leary, who represents Littlemoor and Preston, posted on Facebook: ‘I’ve raised the Shrek-coloured Quay with the cabinet member for highways.

‘It’s disgusting. I was the only member of the South and West area planning committee to vote against the current harbour scheme last year and feel very vindicated in doing so.

‘However, if we’re going to have it let’s make the most of it.’

Many residents were in agreement that the council’s choice of colour was ‘digusting’.

Barbara Sinclair wrote on Facebook: ‘Good grief, is that the intended final colour? Apart from the hideous colour, it’s going to show the dirt horribly. Having said that, the dirt will cover the colour!’

And Richard Palmer commented: ‘At least the sick won’t show on it , or if you drop your carton of mushy peas.’

Karen James wrote the colour ‘should be on Bob the builder not on a historic harbourside’.

However locals theorised there might be a different reason for such a bright colour.

Daniel Corney suggested the ‘brilliant’ shade of green had perhaps been chosen for people with visual impairments.

And Sam Childs added: ‘There is no curb. So, being green gives you a distinguished path and road. Which is good for those who have bad sight and also hopefully encourages children to stay on the green path rather than run into the road.’

The path is part of a seven-month project to resurface and improve the street scene at the iconic harbour in Weymouth, Dorset.

So far work has included the widening and resurfacing of footways, realignment of curbs and the installation of new drainage channels.

The project will finish May 27.

Dorset Council will also be installing benches along the harbourside footway, erecting signs, reinstating bollards and finishing lining work over the next month.

A spokesperson told DorsetLive: ‘Over the next month we will also be installing benches along the harbourside footway, erecting signs, reinstating bollards and finishing lining work. Work should be completed by the half term holidays.’
