Video platform TikTok first took off in 2018 – becoming a global social media sensation.
Its famously short clips are often creatively edited, using music, voice effects, GIFs, ‘visual enhancement’ technology, special effects and even video-altering filters.
The filters are similar to those on Instagram and Snapchat, with make-up and hair colour changes among them – but currently trending is the Rotoscope filter, which essentially colour blocks everything out (including people).
So if you see a TikTok obviously featuring a filter, is there anyway to see the original version?
And if you’ve popped a filter on your own TikTok video, can you later decide to take it off?
Here’s what you need to know.
Can you remove TikTok filters?
To be brief, you can’t remove filters on someone else’s TikTok video.
In fact, you can’t do any type of editing in-app to their video, as is often the case.
Even if you were to rip their video off TikTok (which you obviously shouldn’t do), there’s no external platform that can digitally strip the filter off the video. It is what it is.
Maddeningly, if you’ve posted your own video and are full of regret about your filter choice, you’re a bit stuck too.
Your only option is to delete the video. Once it’s live, you can’t take any filters off.
But if you’ve yet to post, you’re in better luck, as filters can be removed from draft videos.
Simply head to your profile, then Drafts, then click the back button to resume editing. Tap on Effects, and click Undo until you’re happy all filters and effects have been removed.
