People queuing up for humanitarian aid in a Ukrainian city were fired on by Russian forces, it has been reported.
Six civilians are believed to have been killed and another 15 injured when enemy troops fired long-range weapons at the Nova Poshta checkpoint in Kharkiv.
A harrowing picture shows the bloodied body of a man lying next where a shell had hit the ground.
The number of victims is still being determined, governor of Kharkiv Oblast Oleh Synyehubov said.
Eight residents were injured when Russia launched 32 shelling attacks in the space of 24 hours.
That number includes the death of Borys Romanchenko, 96, who had survived Hitler only to be killed by Vladimir Putin’s forces.
He survived four concentration camps during World War II and spent his life raising awareness of the Nazi atrocities, until he was burned alive after Russian artillery hit his home.
As Russia’s war in Ukraine has entered its second month, fighting was reported overnight in several cities.
At least 500 people have been killed in Kharkiv since the war began on February 24, most during targeted shelling of residential areas, and thousands have been injured.
Shocking photos emerged online of Nina Zhuk, a pharmacist working at the ‘9.1.1.’ drugstore in the city, whose face endured devastating injuries during a bombing in the city centre this week.
Sharing these on Facebook, Ukraine’s health minister Viktor Liashko said: ‘During the bombing of the central part of Kharkiv, she was at her workplace and received serious facial burns.
‘A long rehab and more than one surgery ahead of her. But she doesn’t regret anything, and calls on everyone, even at the risk of their life to help others.’
The heavy bombardment has also destroyed buildings and forced thousands to flee their homes, while many have sought refuge in underground metro stations.
