Netflix has suspended its service in Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, the company said today.

Earlier this week, the streaming service temporarily stopped all future projects and acquisitions in Russia as it assessed the impact of Vladimir Putin’s attack.

‘Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,’ a Netflix spokesperson said.

Netflix had previously said it wouldn’t comply with a new law requiring large streamers to host 20 Russian propaganda channels such as NTV and Channel One.

The platform later said it was halting all productions in Russia, having been working on four Netflix originals in the country at the time.

Netflix currently has around 1million subscribers in Russia, according to Bloomberg.

Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, and Sony have all delayed releasing new films including The Batman, Turning Red, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in Russian cinemas.

Tech giants such as Microsoft, Apple and Dell have suspended sales in Russia, while Ikea has closed its stores and Nike will no longer fulfil online orders.

American Express has suspended all services in Russia and Belarus, following similar measures by Visa and Mastercard.
