A woman in her thirties was killed as a tree fell on the car she was in, as Storm Eunice battered London with high-speed winds.

The alarm was raised at around 4pm this afternoon in the northern borough of Haringey.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver – a man in his 30s – was taken to hospital. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Police believe they know her identity of the woman and her family have been informed.

‘I’d like to pay tribute to all those in the emergency services who have been working tirelessly to keep us safe and urge all Londoners to remain cautious and avoid taking risks as this storm passes.’

The Met Office issued a rare red weather alert for London earlier today, as the storm overturned vehicles and ripped the roof of the O2 Arena to shreds.
