Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sent shockwaves across the international community, with numerous countries discussing the military actions they plan to take.

At present there are no plans for military involvement from other countries – although the British army’s General Sir Richard Shirref has said the UK ‘could soon be at war with Russia’ and Prime Minister Boris Johnson added that the UK ‘will not just look away’.

The conflict has led many to wonder which country is home to the world’s biggest army – and how many troops it has.

Who has the most military might?

Collectively, as an alliance, Nato is probably a leading military force in the world.

The organisation has 30-member-states including the UK and the US and promises its members freedom and security.

Taking alliances out of the equation, here’s a look at the top five biggest armies in the world and how many active military personnel they currently have.

1. China: 2 million

2. India: 1.44 million

3. The United States: 1.4 million

4. North Korea: 1.3 million

5. Russia: 1 million

How does Ukraine’s military compare to Russia’s?

Russia, with its 1 million active military personnel, is much stronger than Ukraine.

Their army has more than 13,300 tanks, around 20,000 armoured fighting vehicles, nearly 6,000 pieces of artillery and more than 500 land-based ballistic missile launchers.

The Russian navy is also a force to be reckoned with. It operates 74 warships and 52 submarines.

Additionally, the Russian air force has around 1,300 aircraft and 500 helicopters.

These figures are significantly higher than Ukraine’s numbers. Ukraine has about 200,000 military personnel, which is a fifth of Russia’s staff count.

Their army has just over 2,100 tanks, 2,870 armoured fighting vehicles and 2,000 pieces of artillery.

The Ukrainian navy has no submarines, only two warships, and their air force owns about 150 aircraft and 40 helicopters.

It is believed that around 200,000 Russian soldiers are currently in and around Ukraine.
