A man who fell to his death to his death from a lorry amid high speed winds is the first to be killed by Storm Dudley.
The victim, in his sixties, plunged around 12 feet after falling from the double-decker wagon. It is believed he was attempting to unload heavy goods in high winds when he lost his balance.
Emergency services were called to the accident in Marston Green, near Solihull, West Midlands, at 9pm last night.
Medics tried to revive the man at the scene but despite their efforts he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Health and Safety Executive said it was ‘making enquiries alongside police’. It did not name the company the man worked for.
A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman said: ‘On arrival we discovered one male patient in a critical condition.
‘Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.’
Gusts of up to 40mph had buffeted the Midlands as Storm Dudley swept across the country, leaving thousands without power in northern areas.
Weather warnings are in place across the UK tomorrow as Storm Eunice approaches.
Winds of up to 100mph are expected, with the risk of trees toppling over, homes being flooded and flying debris putting lives at risk.
The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for the South West as people are urged to stay inside if they can tomorrow. Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place for most of UK.
