A grandfather has won more than £2,600 after betting just 3p on a 10-fold accumulator.

Janus ‘George’ Wagonback did ‘little jumps’ – he is 85 after all – as he read the football scores in the paper the following day.

His stake was so small most betting shops wouldn’t have accepted it, and with odds just shy of 90,000-1, it was a long shot.

But it turns out George is a bit of an old pro. He said: ‘I’ve had some significant wins on the football over the years, much bigger than this one.

‘But then again, I usually bet more than 3p, which is basically loose change that I had in my pocket.’

Betfred normally operates with a minimum stake of 5p, but were happy to make an exception for George as he is a regular.

George’s bet was all the more remarkable as he reckoned all ten games would end up a draw.

What did George bet on?

Millwall 0 – 0 Preston

Wimbledon 2 – 2 Cheltenham

Bradford 1 – 1 Leyton Orient

Colchester 1 – 1 Rochdale

Swindon 1 – 1 Crawley

Dundee 0 – 0 Dundee United

Hibernian 0 – 0 Hearts

Ross County 1 – 1 Aberdeen

St Mirren 1 – 1 Motherwell

Lebanon 1 – 1 Iraq

George said: ‘I was confident the Scottish games would all be draws, as they often are up there.

‘I didn’t know I’d won until I checked the paper the next day. I did feel good, but can’t jump around much these days – only little jumps.’

George is originally from Budapest in Hungary but moved to the UK as a political refugee in the 1950s.

He is an experienced chess player, representing his club in Mansfield, and was also named Mr Nottingham in 1969 on the back of his fitness and body-building exploits.

He said: ‘I have always been a winner because I set my mind to achieve things.

‘My ambition is to skin Betfred for a million.’

Betfred boss Fred Done said: ‘I’ve been in this business for over 50 years and cannot remember anyone winning so much from just three pence.

‘It is a truly remarkable win, with him beating odds of virtually 90,000/1.’
