Ottawa’s police chief resigned Tuesday after criticism for his department’s handling of the Covid-19 protests that have occupied parts of Canada’s capital city for the past three weeks.
Police Chief Peter Sloly’s resignation is a direct result of his botched handling of the protests against vaccine mandates, which have forced Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to invoke emergency powers, a Canadian federal government told the Associated Press.
The trucker-led movement against government vaccine mandates has transformed into a more widespread rally against Trudeau’s government.
Trudeau said Monday he will employ rare emergency power measures in attempts to stop the protests, which have hindered downtown Ottawa and slowed traffic at the border for weeks.
Police will start taking a much harder stance against protesters, and will ban blockades at border crossings, airports, and in the entire city of Ottawa, Canada’s public safety minister said.
