A doctor fell 300ft to his death while he and his wife were visiting a mountain ridge where he proposed 27 years earlier.

Dr Jamie Butler, 54, popped the question to his wife Margaret on Striding Edge in the Lake District back in 1994.

The couple, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, returned to the Lakes last November to relive the moment by retracing their steps.

But an inquest heard the romantic pilgrimage ended in tragedy when the GP lost his footing after a mist fell and visibility plummeted.

The hearing in Cockermouth was told the mountain held a special place in the couple’s hearts.

They had set out on the walk in the afternoon on November 2, with Mrs Butler telling the inquest she stopped to catch her breath when they reached Striding Edge.

She described watching her husband walk on into the mist to find the exact spot he asked her to marry him.

When he failed to return for a while she said she called out to him but got no response and decided to call the police ‘concerned something had happened to him’.

Mountain rescuers later found Dr Butler below the ridge where he was declared dead having suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.

Coroner Kirsty Gomersal concluded the death was an accident.

Mrs Butler said: ‘Jamie was a loving husband with two twin boys who he adored.

‘He will be forever missed. He died doing what he loved.’
