After nearly two years of the pandemic, most Americans can now safely take a break from wearing masks indoors, according to new guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The new metrics look at communities where Covid-19 has become more mitigated, and instead of focusing on positive test results looks at how hospitals are managing.

More than 70% of the US population resides in counties where the coronavirus poses a low or medium threat to hospitals. Those people can stop wearing masks, the CDC said on Friday.

The agency is still advising that people, including schoolchildren, wear masks where the risk of Covid-19 is high, which is the case in about 37% of U.S. counties, where about 28% of Americans reside.
