An unvaccinated husband and wife who were married for more than four decades reportedly died seconds apart from the coronavirus, holding hands.
William Stewart, 73, and his wife Carol, 69, of New Hampshire, fell seriously ill from Covid-19 and were hospitalized. Their health took ‘a turn for the worse’ and they died at a hospital in Salem on December 30, according to a GoFundMe page.
‘It is with the heaviest of hearts to share that last night at 9.12pm Bill and Carol peacefully passed away hand in hand with their loved ones bedside,’ their nephew Tim Stewart wrote on the page.
‘They fought a long and hard battle with Covid, both intubated and on life support.’
William was on life support for eight days and Carol was on for two weeks. Due to complications from Covid-19, the husband had lung, kidney and renal failures.
On the last day that they lived, hospital staff wheeled the couple in the same room.
‘Placed both beds side by side, placing my mother’s hand into my father’s hand,’ their daughter Melissa Noke told WMUR.
‘As soon as they touched hands, my father took his last breath, and then my mother 10 seconds later.’
All eight members of the Stewart family had recently tested positive for the coronavirus, according to WMUR.
William and Carol met as children and began a romantic relationship as adults, according to their obituaries from the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home in Salem. William was a machinist and his wife worked in health care. They were married for 44 years.
They are survived by three daughters and seven grandchildren.
‘I truly believe that the power of prayers and all the kind words that have been shared over the past few weeks is what kept them fighting,’ Tim wrote. ‘It also kept us hopeful for the best.’
