Spectacular drone footage has revealed a rare natural phenomenon which sees water appear to boil in freezing conditions.

The effect can be seen when air temperatures fall rapidly but the sea remains relatively warm, leaving a misty fog above the surface.

The viral footage was taken in eastern Russia by amateur filmmaker Eduard Olegovich.

In it, an optical illusion means frozen air seems to be steaming from the water near the town of Korsakov, on Russia’s largest island, Sakhalin.

Eduard says he had been experimenting with drone footage for more than 10 years but that everything fell into place at the right time for his latest effort in Siberia.

He explained: ‘I noticed that people who use drones have had a lot of publicity of late, but in fact, when used properly, they are a great way of allowing us to look at things in difficult-to-reach places from a different angle.’

The 33-year-old captured the video on New Year’s Day, when temperatures suddenly plunged to -20°C.

Eduard continued: ‘My windows overlook the bay directly, and I saw this fantastically beautiful phenomenon.

‘Without thinking twice, I took my drones, got into the car and drove to the beach to capture this beautiful spectacle. You can see the result in the video.

‘This weather phenomenon happens when the water temperature is still high and the air temperature drops to -20°C. This video shows the scale of the fog.’

Local weather services confirmed that temperatures around the time the video was taken were around -14°C.
