A man who reportedly tried to jump a New York City subway turnstile in Queens died after falling to the ground and cracking his head.

Surveillance footage shows the moment the 28-year-old man attempted to evade the $2.75 subway fare early Sunday by jumping over the turnstiles at the Forest Hills 71st Avenue train station.

The footage shows the man making several failed tries at hopping over the turnstile. In the first, he falls and appears to drop his phone.

He then stumbles back briefly as if he is drunk, before attempting to try and jump over another turnstile.

In his final attempt, he can be seen hoisting himself up and eventually flipping over the barrier, crashing down onto his head and breaking his neck, according to police.

The incident occurred at 6.30am, according to the Daily Mail. Cops and emergency medical service personnel were called to the scene, but found the man lying unconscious on the floor of the station, which serves the E, F, M and R lines.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and it is believed that he died when his head struck the floor. However, as of Monday morning, a city medical examiner has yet to release a cause of death.

The accident comes as the newly-inaugurated New York City Mayor Eric Adams says he will take a tougher stance on crime than his predecessor Bill de Blasio.

Adams, 61, a former New York City police officer, began his first day on the job on Saturday by riding the subway from his Brooklyn home to City Hall. He chatted with New Yorkers and a throng of reporters following him along.

While waiting for the train, he called 911 to report a fight after witnessing two men tussling near the subway station.

Not only does Adams face the challenge of combating the significant rise in violent crime in the city, but he is tasked with pulling the city out of the pandemic. New York has seen record numbers of Covid-19 cases in recent days, driven by the Omicron variant and holiday gatherings.
