As well as being a time to catch up with friends and family, Christmas also gives many of us the chance for a well-earned break from work.

If you’re one of those people who did have to work over the festive season – or you have to go back to work after Christmas Day – the good news is that New Year is just around the corner, bringing more bank holidays with it.

Once again 2021 has been a challenging year, and many will be hoping for better things in 2022 – as well as getting the chance for that last little bit of time off before normality resumes.

But is New Year’s Eve a bank holiday – and when is the next national day off?

Is New Year’s Eve a bank holiday?

New Year’s Eve, December 31, is not a bank holiday in England and Wales, meaning that shops such as supermarkets and services such as banks should be open as usual – handy if you need to run errands or stock up on supplies post-Christmas.

Although New Year’s Day is normally a bank holiday, this year it falls on a Saturday – meaning that we get an additional New Year bank holiday on Monday January 3.

This is also the case in Wales and Northern Ireland – although in Scotland, where January 2 is normally also a bank holiday, you get two ‘substitute’ holidays on January 3 and on Tuesday January 4.

After this, the next bank holiday in England, Wales and Scotland is not until Good Friday, which this year is on Friday April 15 – or, if you’re in Northern Ireland, St Patrick’s Day on Thursday March 17.

However, we can all look forward to some extra time off in 2022 – as we’re getting a four-day bank holiday weekend in early June to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The whole of the UK will see the Spring Bank Holiday moved to Thursday June 2, while an additional, Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday, falls on Friday June 3.
