When are the Oxford Street Christmas lights turned on and who is doing it?

After Bonfire Night, depending on who you ask, it’s basically already Christmas.

It’s time to start thinking about when to start your shopping, indulging in the Christmas menus at Starbucks and other places and hearing Mariah Carey’s enduring All I Want for Christmas Is You in every shop you enter.

As the longest shopping street in Europe, expect to hear Mariah a lot on Oxford Street.

One town already got the jumpstart on making their high streets looking holly and jolly, with one switching them on in February but when will Oxford Street get its Christmas light switch-on? Will there be a ceremony this year?

When will the Oxford Street lights be switched on?

There isn’t a date set for the annual unveiling of the Oxford Street lights just yet, and no word on which celebrity might be doing the honours.

The Christmas lights are always worth the wait, though.

Last year’s theme was dedicated to the heroes of 2020, with a special new light’s display reading ‘To London with Love’.

Members of the public could nominate their 2020 Hero for a chance to see their name in the iconic world-famous lighting display and each week saw a new name adorn Oxford Circus for a full seven days.

In the past, superstars including Leona Lewis, Kylie Minogue, Craig David and Robbie Williams have turned on the lights.

What other London Christmas lights are there?

While the Oxford Street switch-on remains a secret for now, there are plenty of other places in London to get your festive fix.

Leadenhall Market, November 19

On Friday, November 19, the City of London’s Christmas lights will be switched on by the Lord Mayor of London.

There will also be an evening of festivities on December 8, with late-night shopping and Christmas workshops, including wreath making and whisky tasting.

Tickets must be booked in advance for the workshops, with prices varying from £5 to £20.

Covent Garden, November 9

This year, alongside the usual spectacular decorations and huge Christmas tree, the Covent Garden Christmas celebrations will include an immersive LEGO installation, mulled wine and a daily snowfall display.

The snowfall display will take place daily on the hour from 12pm until 7pm, on the West and North piazzas.

Also part of the celebrations will be a Frozen takeover, a traditional Christmas Village complete with bauble dining domes, a Christmas Sandwich Festival and much more.

Greenwich, November 17

The Greenwich celebrations will include a lantern parade and the lights switch-on in the town centre.

Regent Street, November 13

There’ll be no formal switch-on event, but the famous shopping street will have the lights illuminated from 2pm every day from November 13.
