Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tested positive for the coronavirus while attending the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference despite being fully vaccinated.
Garcetti his isolating in his hotel in Glasgow, Scotland, where the summit took place.
‘Mayor Garcetti tested positive for COVID-19 earlier today,’ his office tweeted on Wednesday.
‘He is feeling good and isolating in his hotel room. He is fully vaccinated.’
It was not immediately known who Garcetti came into contact with at the conference that was considered the most important convening on fighting climate change.
Garcetti was found to have the coronavirus hours after President Joe Biden departed the summit and flew back to Washington, DC. Biden delivered remarks at COP26 on Monday and Tuesday. The president did not see Garcetti at the summit, a White House official told the Daily Mail.
But Garcetti was seen walking with John Kerry, the first United States special presidential envoy for climate, on Monday. Kerry met with Biden while in Scotland. Garcetti and Kerry wore masks while walking together.
Garcetti on Wednesday was scheduled to moderate a panel on ‘international finance to support city climate action’, as well as take part in another event on combatting climate change.
COP26 attendees are required to take coronavirus tests daily and wear face masks. Social distancing at the packed venue was not possible.
