Friends and family have paid tribute to a ‘much loved’ mum who has died just days after her teenage son was killed in a car crash.
Sara Jane Smith died last weekend, less than a fortnight after her son Martin Ward, 18, lost his life in a road accident.
Martin, along with 19-year-old pals Mason Hall and Ryan Geddes, were killed when the white Ford Fiesta they were travelling in smashed into a tree in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on October 24.
Speaking after the fatal accident, the devastated mum, whose cause of death has yet to be confirmed, said Mason ‘was a very close friend’ of her son’s, adding that the two had ‘basically grown up together and he was like a stepson to me’.
She told The Star: ‘They were both such loving kids and will be so sadly missed.
‘This shouldn’t have happened. They hadn’t even lived their lives.’
South Yorkshire Police are investigating the crash and inquests into the teenagers’ deaths will be held in due course.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from devastated loved ones and friends who are now trying to come to terms with Sara’s death.
One wrote: Can’t believe I’m writing this after everything that has happened this year already. RIP Sara Jane Smith, many memories I’ll never forget.’
Another added: ‘RIP Sara Jane Smith, such tragic news, go be with your lad now xx.’
And a third said: ‘Really don’t know what to put, head’s all over the place. I’m sure Josh, Martin and Tommy will be showing you the ropes up there.’
Hers is the fourth death to rock the family, after two other relatives were killed in a crash at the end of January, YorkshireLive reports.
Tommy Hydes, 24, and his nephew Josh Hydes, 20, died after their car plunged from a bridge into the River Don in Sheffield on January 30.
The pair were rushed to hospital but were declared dead there a short time later.
