A man heard a ‘crunching noise’ when his attacker bit off ‘a large portion’ of his ear in a row over an ex-partner.

Tyler Keen, 19, heard the grizzly noise and saw something fall from Jack Jones’ mouth after he sunk his teeth into him following a confrontation at a friend’s house.

Mr Keen was taken to hospital but doctors decided they could not reattach his ear.

Appearing at Caernarfon Crown Court, Jones, 19, of Bangor, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and was jailed for four years and ten months.

Prosecutor Jade Tufail told how Jones saw Mr Keen outside a friend’s house on the Maesgeirchen estate in Bangor on March 2.

Jones had resented the fact Mr Keen had asked out his ex-girlfriend.

He confronted Mr Keen, referred to his ex, then without warning punched Mr Keen in the jaw.

Jones then threw about 20 punches at his head and body as Mr Keen tried to protect himself.

As the pair moved inside the property Jones picked a bike frame and tried to hit Mr Keen with it before biting his right ear.

The prosecutor said: ‘Mr Keen heard a crunching noise and saw something fall out of the defendant’s mouth and onto the floor.

‘That something turned out to be a large portion of Mr Keen’s right ear.’

Jones ‘soon realised the gravity’ of what he had done and ‘apologised’ later pleading with Mr Keen not to report the matter to the police.

The court heard Mr Keen called 999 and was given advice on ‘how to preserve the detached portion of his ear’.

He was taken to A&E at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor before being transferred for specialist treatment in Merseyside but it was decided the ear could not be reattached.

The court heard how Jones called Mr Keen three times begging him not to report the incident and a friend told him he would pay £2,000 not to tell police.

Ms Tufail said Mr Keen’s mum reported the incident and Jones was arrested.

In a victim impact statement, Mr Keen said he had been in excruciating pain and couldn’t sleep on his right side following the attack.

He said that his girlfriend had found the wound ‘ugly’ and left him.

He said that she said that her parents ‘would not like it if she was going out with someone who had half an ear missing.’

Mr Keen said he also worried potential employers may think he is a ‘troublemaker’ because of the injury.

He added: ‘I cannot believe a human being would do that to another. It’s not a human thing to do. I thought we were friends.’

Dafydd Roberts, mitigating, said Jones was ashamed and remorseful.

He had a troubled upbringing with no father figure and lived in 13 placements in care.

He said: ‘He was an angry boy growing up and sadly that has resulted in him becoming an angry young man.’

Judge Timothy Petts, said nothing could justify the attack. He said the injury was irreversible and described photographs of it as ‘gruesome’.
