A man has been charged with raping an elderly woman who he allegedly attacked in her own home last week.

Brady Hickman, 32, has been charged with rape and two counts of sexual assault by penetration after an incident in Gloucester, his home city, last week.

He appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court today where he did not yet enter a plea.

Police received a call after an elderly woman activated her Lifeline personal alarm in the early hours of Thursday last week.

Detective Sergeant Faye Satchwell-Bennett said the woman had shown ‘amazing bravery, strength and courage during this process’.

She added: ‘She wants to thank our officers and the community for the support she has received.’

Hickman was traced and arrested after members of the public responded to a police appeal over the weekend.

District Judge Nicholas Wattam said that the rape charge can only be dealt with at Gloucester Crown Court and he committed the case there for a first hearing on December 17.

The judge remanded Hickman in custody until that date.
