Let’s be real for a minute: the last couple of years have been exhausting.

But with the promise of a four-day bank holiday in 2022, it seems like there’s a slither of hope of some proper, enjoyable time off soon.

Travel is opening up, too, which means a holiday abroad somewhere closer to home could be on the cards.

Or you could simply be looking forward to a week off so you can stay in bed all day without a care in the world.

Whatever you plan to do with your bank holidays and hard-earned annual leave – it is sometimes useful to think ahead.

So, here’s a full list of the 2022 bank holidays, and how you can make the most of them.

How to maximise your annual leave in 2022

If you want a long stretch of time off next year, planning annual leave around bank holidays is a bright idea.

Of course, you won’t be the only one to have it – so book that annual leave ahead of time.

April or June is your best bet for a longer break with less days off spent for 2022, assuming you work a Monday to Friday pattern.

Aim for one of these top combinations:

Saturday, April 9 to Monday, April 18

Four days annual leave, bookended by weekends and the Easter bank holidays, will net you 10 consecutive days off.

Dates to book: April 11, 12, 13 and 14.

Saturday, April 9 to Sunday, April 24

Eight days annual leave, plus the Easter bank holidays, will bag you 16 consecutive days off.

Dates to book: April 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Saturday, 30 April to Sunday, May 8

Four days annual leave, with weekends and the early May bank holiday, gives you nine days off.

Dates to book: May 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, June 5

Three days annual leave, plus spring and Jubilee bank holidays, will get you nine consecutive days off.

Dates to book: May 30 and 31, plus June 1.

Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, June 12

Eight days annual leave, plus the spring and Jubilee bank holidays, will give you 16 consecutive days off.

Dates to book: May 30 and 31, plus June 1, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

If you’re in Scotland and Northern Ireland, then you have an extra couple of bank holidays to play with.

For Scots, just three days of annual leave in the first week of January (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) will extend your Christmas break by five days (including the weekend).

Meanwhile, for just a day of annual leave, those in Northern Ireland can book off Monday, July 11 to create a four-day weekend – just a few weeks after we get four days off in June.
