Halloween shenanigans went on well into the night as Brits crowded into bars to celebrate all things spooky.
With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, most people decided to dress up and go out of the Saturday night – before nursing their hangovers on the day itself.
There were plenty of spectacular costumes on show – as pictures from Newcastle and Nottingham showed.
Many covered themselves in blood and gore while some went for a less traditional approach.
A huge group of minions were spotted along with a smattering of Teletubbies and super heroes.
Some in Newcastle used the opportunity to pay homage to the city’s football club’s controversial new owners – the Saudi state.
It all got a bit much for some and there were a fair few sad looking pumpkins trying to find their way home late at night.
The celebrations meant all the more after Halloween was all but cancelled last year due to Covid restrictions.
With the country under a tiered system of restrictions, people were told to avoid pubs and bars and only celebrate with those they lived with.
There were no such rules this year, although Covid cases remain high in several parts of the country.
Heavy rain had deluged much of the country all day Saturday – raising fears this year’s Halloween was set to be a wash out.
But the downpours cleared on Saturday night to leave conditions dry for those heading out on the town – before returning with a vengeance on Sunday.
It was still a cold evening as the country approaches winter but many still braved the elements with skimpy costumes.
Playboy bunnies were among the most popular outfit choices for many and a group of men also donned their finest French maid gear.
There was a surprising lack of people paying homage to the latest TV sensation Squid Game, despite it being hyped as the must-have costumer for 2021.
Police had warned shop keepers to be on the look-out for potential trouble makers and limit the sale of flour and eggs to under-18s.
Many forces around the country have reiterated Halloween ‘etiquette’, advising people to only trick or treat with houses that have decorations.
Wiltshire Police posted on Facebook: ‘Unexpected callers after dark can be really frightening for some of the more vulnerable members of our community.
‘If you see a no ‘trick or treat here’ poster, please respect it.’
