Footage has emerged of rats nibbling on fresh pastries in the bakery section of a Sainsbury’s store before scuttling away as a shopper approaches them.

Filmmaker Anthony Mitson was browsing at the supermarket’s branch on Essex Road in Islington, north London, when he spotted the two chunky rodents gorging on the last croissant left on the uncovered stands.

He managed to start filming them just as they noticed him before leaping up behind the shelving of the dairy section and disappearing from sight.

Sainsbury’s said they took ‘immediate action’ to clean the store on Sunday and had called in pest control.

The clip quickly went viral on social media, with users accusing the company of ‘unsanitary’ conditions and ‘putting your customers’ health at risk’.

Richie Barlow wrote: ‘That’s me NEVER buying pastries from @sainsburys ever again… @SainsburysNews do you have names for these two rats yet?’

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: ‘Safety and hygiene is the most important thing to us and we are very sorry for this experience.

‘We are taking immediate action to clean our Essex Road store and pest control have been called.

‘We apologise to our customers who can be reassured we will do everything we can to ensure the problem is fixed as soon as possible.’

Claims emerged on Friday that a Sainsbury’s delivery driver left a bottle of his urine in an empty container which was later filled with a customer’s shopping – some of which was fresh and loose – in Grimsby, Lincolnshire.

It was only discovered after another driver took over the van, according to GrimsbyLive.

Sainsbury’s said the incident ‘took place earlier this year and immediate action was taken at the time’, and that all staff are ‘trained to meet strict hygiene standards’.
