Donald Trump has gone to court in an attempt to get a judge to force Twitter to restore his account.

The former President was banned from a number of social media platforms following the storming of the US Capitol earlier this year.

Lawyers representing Mr Trump – who was angered by Twitter’s actions – filed a motion in the US District Court in Miami seeking a preliminary injunction against the company and its CEO, Jack Dorsey.

They argue that Twitter is censoring Mr Trump and violating his First Amendment rights.

The social media company has declined to comment on the proceedings.

It permanently banned the ex Republican president from its platform days after his followers violently stormed Washington’s Capitol building, to try to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Five people were left dead following the chaos, while four police officers died by suicide within months of attempting to defend the building, on January 6, 2021.

It came after Mr Trump encouraged the protesters at a rally earlier that day.

Following the riot, Twitter raised concerns that Mr Trump – who had nearly 90 million followers – would incite further violence via its platform.

He was also suspended from Facebook and YouTube over similar concerns.

Facebook’s ban will last two years – until January 7, 2023 – after which the company will review his suspension, while YouTube’s ban is indefinite.

In July, Mr Trump filed lawsuits in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida against all three tech companies and their CEOs, claiming that he and other conservatives have been wrongfully censored.

The motion for a preliminary injunction was filed as part of Mr Trump’s case against Twitter.
