California has become the first state to lay out a coronavirus vaccination mandate for students in elementary through high school.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the mandate on Friday at a middle school in San Francisco.

‘We want to end this pandemic,’ the Democratic governor said. ‘We are all exhausted by it.’

The mandate would be imposed for seventh to twelfth graders the semester after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants full approval of the vaccine for children 12 years and older, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Kindergartners to sixth graders would be subject to the mandate after the jab is approved for children under 12 years old.

So far, the FDA has only granted full approval of the vaccine for people 16 years and older. The vaccine has authorization for emergency use on children as young as 12.

The mandate could take effect for students 12 years and older as soon as January 2022, Newsom said.

‘There’s still a struggle to get to where we need to be,’ Newsom said regarding the pandemic. ‘And that means we need to do more, and we need to do better.’
