They’re Britain’s most famous couple but William and Kate are seldom this unguarded in public.
The future king and queen are fiercely private despite leading very public lives, rarely giving away more than they need to.
But pictures shared following an event in London this weekend capture a rare public display of affection between the pair.
Candid black and white photographs of the royal couple at the Earthshot Prize Awards, an environmental scheme where organisations with innovative ideas to tackle climate change were awarded £1 million, have got royal watchers talking.
The pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were captured by royal photographer Chris Jackson, who is married to Kate’s friend and stylist Natasha Archer.
Admirers have pored over the unusually intimate pictures for clues about the private lives behind the public personas.
Others have pointed out the black and white images are stylistically similar to Meghan Markle’s preferred Instagram style.
Metro.co.uk asked body language expert Judi James what insights she thinks can be drawn from the images.
She said: ‘This was such a groundbreaking event for William and Kate and it is telling that the photos they chose to go with it are some of the most romantic and intimate yet, showing a more ‘backstage’ view of the couple as they enjoyed the launch of their Earthshot awards.
‘The Cambridges have never been known for their PDAs and these are subtle compared to some of the loving body language and touch rituals of Harry & Meghan but the affection is clearly there and obviously strong between them.
‘Their eye contact is quietly admiring and flirtatious, with William looking back to speak to his wife as they burst through some double doors while she uses a smile and eye-gaze to signal affection.
‘Her arm slides around his waist in a gesture that is shot from behind the couple, making this a glimpse into what might normally be more hidden from view at royal events.
‘Her hand is laid with the fingers slightly splayed, suggesting support and a gentle reminder that she’s got his back.
‘The gesture also seems to be one they use to communicate as her eye contact suggests full attention as he speaks.
‘This was a successful global event for the couple and their body language suggests they felt confident enough to share their more romantic side with the world as a result.’
In other royal news, the Queen has cancelled a trip to Northern Ireland on doctor’s orders.
In a rare move, the 95-year-old has postponed the visit which was due to take place today and tomorrow and will instead ‘rest for a few days.’
Buckingham Palace said she was ‘disappointed’ not to be able to go but promised the people of Northern Ireland she’d be visiting again soon.
