One person was injured after a fight outside a private Christian school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, resulted in gunfire.
Multiple people were detained after the shooting on Thursday afternoon outside Christ Lutheran School, said Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
One victim has been hospitalized with a gunshot wound and was in stable condition, Medina said.
The altercation began when ‘some younger adults’ walked away from Sandia High School to the Christian school around 12.30pm during lunch, according to KOB 4.
Fighting ensued in the Christ Lutheran parking lot which escalated to someone taking out and firing a gun, Medina said.
Initially cops believed no one was injured, but a victim later appeared at UNM Hospital with a gunshot wound.
Investigators are still trying to identify the suspect and where the weapon came from, Medina added.
Medina did not comment on whether any of the individuals involved attended Christ Lutheran or Sandia High.
Albuquerque Public Schools spokeswoman Monica Armenta said Sandia High was under shelter-in-place after ‘reports of gunshots heard in the area’.
Paul Durkin, whose daughter attends Christ Lutheran, told Albuquerque Journal that he was putting her in a car seat when he heard eight to 10 gunshots.
‘Then, people started fleeing in every direction,’ the father said. ‘It was just a scary experience.’
Durkin is seen moving quickly around the car and into the driver’s seat as his daughter exclaims “that’s so loud, so loud.” Durkin tells his daughter “hold on babygirl” as he pulled out a cell phone.
“I went into a high alert mode and I was just processing, trying to keep us safe,” Durkin said.
A dash cam video on Durkin’s vehicle shows him run to the driver’s seat as his daughter says, ‘That’s so loud, so loud’. Durkin then tells her, ‘hold on baby girl’, as he takes out his mobile phone.
‘I went into a high alert mode and I was just processing, trying to keep us safe,’ Durkin said.
Sandia High senior Jaz Czurniak told KOB 4 that her heart dropped immediately when she heard the gunshots.
‘I couldn’t breathe, like I was running and as soon as we ran into this neighborhood a nice lady invited us in,’ she said.
