Firefighters were targeted by yobs in a ‘disgusting’ attack in Edinburgh.
Missiles were hurled at the emergency workers as they took on an out-of-control bonfire on Sunday night.
No one was injured, although the ‘shock of being verbally and physically attacked will stay with the firefighters for some time’, The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has said.
A fire engine was left damaged during the ‘shameful’ incident in the grounds of Mansion House, Gracemount around 9pm.
Youths are believed to be responsible, but no arrests have been made.
An investigation has been launched as police warn ‘this kind of behaviour towards emergency services doing their job will not be tolerated’.
The culprits could face up to 12 months in prison, a £10,000 fine, or both.
It comes after an investigation was launched in Hemlington after firefighters attending the scene of a blaze were pelted with bottles and rocks.
Martin Blunden, Chief Officer of the SFRS, has warned that being targeted is ‘sadly something that is far too regular for all public sector workers’.
Lesley Macinnes, a councillor for Liberton Gilmerton and deputy leader of the city’s SNP group, added: ‘I am very concerned to hear that emergency service workers were abused in this shameful manner while they were protecting the community.
‘I am also really pleased to hear that police are actively following this up and I hope that this will result in the people responsible for this abuse are found quickly.’
