Husband in court over ‘murder’ of wife who fell to death from Arthur’s Seat

A husband has been charged with murdering his wife after she plunged to her death from an Edinburgh hill.

Fawziyah Javed, 31, died last week after falling from Arthur’s Seat in the Scottish capital.

Four days after his arrest, Kashif Anwar appeared in court to be formally charged with her murder.

The 27-year-old did not enter a plea at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and will be held behind bars until the next hearing.

Fawziyah, a trainee solicitor, was reportedly on her honeymoon when she died at around 9pm on September 2.

It has also been reported the newlywed was pregnant when she plummeted to her death.

Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, is famed for its steep climbs and its rocky, jagged drops close to the 823ft summit.

Fawziyah Javed is understood to have been on her honeymoon in the capital when she was involved in the fatal incident at around 9pm on Thursday.

In a tribute posted on Facebook, her uncle Zareef Zaf Latif said: ‘Fawziyah, our precious niece, taken away from us way too soon. Have so many memories of you as a little girl.

‘Will miss you so much. May Allah grant you a special place in Jannat. I hope the angels take care of you until we meet again.’

Friends at the InTouch Foundation, a homelessness charity where Fawziyah had volunteered since 2015, told the BBC she was a ‘genuine and very kind-hearted person’. 

Chief exec Osman Gondal said: ‘We have lost a community champion – somebody who had a passion and drive to help people that were in need.’

Another woman who knew her wrote on Facebook: ‘Lovely amazing gem of a lady, she will be truly missed.’

One of Ms Javed’s neighbours broke down in tears as she described her as a ‘beautiful person’.

Police Scotland detective inspector Bob Williamson said in a statement on Saturday: ‘Fawziyah’s family ask for their privacy to be respected during this extremely difficult time.

‘I’d like to thank the officers and partners who attended the scene on Thursday evening and have assisted with our ongoing enquiries.’
