A cat that went missing almost four months ago has been reunited with his owners — after being found 130 miles away.
Jo Walker, 43, believes her beloved moggy Dexter hitched a lift in a builder’s van near her home in Willenhall, West Midlands, before travelling to Andover in Wiltshire.
The family feared the worst when they couldn’t find any sign of their pet despite an extensive search when he disappeared back in May.
But Jo’s husband Mark, 45, was left stunned when he received a call from a vet 130 miles away on August 17 to say Dexter had been found safe and well.
The adventurous cat is believed to have sneaked into the boot of a workman’s van before being discovered at a service station on the M6.
He then hopped into another car before the motorist realised when they got back to their home in Wiltshire and took him to a vet to check whether he was micro-chipped.
Teacher Jo and her overjoyed eight-year-old daughter Ashleigh drove the six-hour round trip to pick up the three-year-old pet the following day.
Married mum-of-two Jo said: ‘When Ashleigh heard the call to say he had been found she cried for about ten minutes, she really cried happy tears.
‘We can only guess he may have crawled into a work van, which would account for the fact that he travelled quite a few miles to a service station on the M6.’
She said they posted fliers around the neighbourhood when he went missing but didn’t hear anything until the vet phoned to say that his microchip had been traced.
She said: ‘That was a bit of shock because he was 130 miles away. It was a massive surprise, to say the least.’
Jo said she was surprised how fit and healthy Dexter looked considering he had been missing for almost four months.
She added: ‘When we got there he was sprawled out on the office desk getting lots of fuss and cuddles
‘We were told by the vet he got in another car at a service station on the M6, but we don’t know which one.
‘We can only guess how he got there, we assume it was a rainy day and a work van was open and he hopped into the back and went on a little trip.
‘Our nearest junction is junction ten and it’s not walking distance, probably six or seven minutes’ drive, so obviously he did hop into a vehicle somehow.’
