Health Secretary Sajid Javid said he is ‘very confident’ that there will be a booster programme for third vaccine doses ‘starting this month’.
He said the details of who will be eligible and how the roll-out will work have yet to be confirmed but that it could be approved ‘within days’.
His assurances come after the head of AstraZeneca warned boosters may not be needed nationwide and that rushing this could place unnecessary burden on the NHS.
Mr Javid told Sky News: ‘In terms of who actually gets it and when, we’re waiting for final advice which could come across, certainly, in the next few days from the JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation).’
He said the advice is expected to include information on whether people should get different vaccines to the ones they have already had or the same ones.
He added: ‘I’m confident that we can start the booster programme this month.’
