A pedestrian died at the scene after being struck by an ambulance in Surrey.
Witnesses said the woman, 40, was waiting at a bus stop when the ambulance crashed into it.
The crash happened on the A23 Brighton Road in the village of Salfords at about 9.20am today.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service vehicle was believed to be heading towards East Surrey Hospital when it careered into the bus shelter.
The major road, which connects the hospital with the town of Redhill and Gatwick Hospital, was closed to northbound traffic as of 6.30pm as investigation work continued.
SurreyLive reporter James Flanders said: ‘The ambulance looks like it swerved left onto the pavement where it smashed into the bus stop and missed a telephone line by an inch.
‘Part of the bus stop is hanging off the side of the ambulance where it came to rest.
‘Glass covers the road in a wide radius and bits of lights and the front bumper remain scattered around the scene.’
A spokesperson for the ambulance service said an investigation into the collision was being carried out by police.
They said: ‘Following a road traffic collision involving a trust ambulance and a pedestrian on Brighton Road, Salfords, at 9.20am today, we can confirm that sadly the pedestrian died at the scene.
‘We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family involved at this difficult time.
‘The circumstances of the collision are being investigated by Surrey Police and we are therefore unable to comment further.’
A police spokesperson said officers, paramedics and firefighters all attended.
‘We’re appealing for witnesses after a single vehicle collision involving a South East Coast Ambulance vehicle and pedestrian on Brighton Road,’ the spokesperson said.
‘Sadly, despite best efforts of paramedics, a 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from officers.’
